The Sharpy Sensation
The Christmas of 1983 is infamously memorable for near-riots caused by soccer moms eager to snag the latest hot-off-the-shelf fad—Cabbage Patch Kids. So why am I hearkening back to a time when shopping was a contact sport and moms came home with black eyes? Because it’s the best way to illustrate the latest hot-off-the-shelf lighting fixture at Starlite Productions.

I sat down recently with one of Starlite’s Lighting Technicians, Steve Kosiba to talk about the Sharpy moving light from Italian manufacturer Clay Paky. Steve told me that the Sharpy is the “Swiss watch of moving lights. The motor drivers stop on a dime which affords near instant transitions.” He also highlighted the 189 watt Phillips Platinum 5R arc lamp that, through precise reflector placement and optics, enables the fixture to produce the light of significantly higher-wattage fixtures. In fact, the light beam from the Sharpy is so crisp and strong that it’s considered to be laser-like in its performance.

Because of its precision performance and long-throw intensity, the Sharpy has become the moving light of choice the world over for stadium and outdoor shows, including last year’s Super Bowl and England’s Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. The list of superstars who rely on the Sharpy’s amazing capabilities continues to grow and now includes Elton John, Madonna and Katy Perry.  Starlite’s Sharpys have trekked all over the country to perform at nationally televised award shows, week-long festivals and high-level corporate events.

Anyone with a cell phone or laptop knows that technology is going smaller and lighter; production lighting is the same. Starlite Productions strives to stay ahead of the tech curve and in doing so purchased 80 Sharpy fixtures for its rental stock. With Customer demand through the roof, having the popular Sharpy in rental stock is like Christmas ’83 all over again—just without the riots. Starlite’s customers are among the best in kinetic art and they trust Steve and the rest of the Starlite staff to provide them with the latest technology in the industry.

Contact your Starlite sales representative today to arrange a Sharpy demonstration. You’ll be amazed at the intensity of the light the Sharpy produces, not to mention the brilliance of the color palette it offers.   You’ll see firsthand a beam that is crisp, with no halos or discoloration and is small and versatile enough to fit into nearly any situation you can imagine.

Show DMX Show Baby

Show DMX Show Baby

City Theatrical's SHoW DMX SHoW Baby, winner of the LDI 2011 Widget of the Year is now available for purchase or rental from Starlite Productions.

SHoW Baby is a wireless DMX transceiver, meaning it can be either a transmitter or a receiver. The award judges commented that SHoW Baby has the easiest user's manual around. "For a transmitter, plug DMX in, for a receiver, don't." SHoW Baby utilizes a clever DMX input jack that senses when a DMX cable from the lighting console is plugged in, and configures itself to be a transmitter. Without sensing DMX in, it configures itself as a receiver. There are no other user choices to make; SHoW Baby is entirely plug-and-play, with no buttons to push, settings to adjust, or menu options to choose.

While SHoW Baby is simple to set up, it utilizes the same state-of-the-art, high fidelity, low latency radio as City Theatrical's top of the line professional system, SHoW DMX Neo, giving it a range of 100m [328'] indoors and 500m [1,640.4'] outdoors. SHoW Baby also utilizes adaptive frequency hopping in the 2.4GHz band so it will not interfere with, or be interfered by, other radio signals.

Yamaha's New Dugan MY16 Automixer Card

Dan Dugan's professional audio career spans the last four decades and he is widely recognized as the inventor of the automatic microphone. So when Dan Dugan Sound Design and Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems introduced the Dugan-MY16 Automatic Mixing Controller Card for Yamaha digital consoles it caused great excitement.

Sound engineers can now manage multiple live mics without continually riding individual faders. The Dugan-MY16 automatically detects the active mics and makes fast, transparent cross-fades without the distracting sonic artifacts common to noise gates. It tracks unscripted dialogue perfectly and maintains consistent system gain for up to 16 open mics. With the Dugan-MY16, cueing mistakes and late fade-ups are a thing of the past!

The MY16 is compatible with the following Yamaha Digital Consoles: 01V96, DM1000, 02R96, DM2000, M7CL, LS9, DSP5D, PM5D, DME24/64N
